Why her aunt had encased Jonathon in a sphere of wobbly goo like this was beyond Greta, but she’d long since learnt to accept her aunt’s inventions without raising an eyebrow.2 Maybe Aunt Tabitha thought a rubberised bouncing squirrel ball was going to be the next big thing in squirrel evolution.3 Greta was sure her aunt would tell her, just as soon as she’d been found.

She tried the handle of the Inventing Shed and the door opened.

‘Jessica?’ she called into the darkness. ‘Are you in there? Aunt Tabitha, are you there?’

There was no reply.

Greta didn’t let the silence worry her. She hadn’t expected her aunt to answer, and if her aunt wasn’t there then there was no reason for Jessica to be there either. She’d probably popped over, seen that Aunt Tabitha wasn’t there and gone home again.

There’d probably be a note waiting for Greta when she got home, saying, No sign of Aunt Tabitha in her Inventing Shed. JXP.4

Greta flicked the light on and looked around.

The benches and worktops were covered with all sorts of things that she didn’t recognise. Greta didn’t have the inventor-y sort of mind, and didn’t know the difference between a widget and a wodget and a wadget, which were things that her aunt could tell apart with her eyes closed and through a thick pair of mittens.

Greta didn’t know what she was looking for, but she looked for it nonetheless. You never found a clue by not looking.

While she searched, she tried to piece together what she knew:

1. Mr Buffalo had had an argument with Aunt Tabitha, but it was all over when he had his room changed.

2. The Bellerophons had heard Aunt Tabitha say she had to check her new invention one last time.

3. Mrs Hummock had done the vacuuming.

4. No one had seen Aunt Tabitha since.

So, the missing bit of the story was the invention.
